WHEATON, Minn. (AP) -- A fishing outing turned deadly for a western Minnesota man.
The body of 50-year-old Charles Krauth was recovered from Mud Lake, just west of Wheaton in Traverse County. Sheriff's deputies found the man's dog and four-wheeler near the spot where he broke through the ice Sunday. Family members became concerned when he failed to return from ice fishing.
Authorities tell KSTP-TV the ice was only about one inch thick where the accident took place.
Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, seven men and a boy were rescued by airboat after they became stranded by a huge crack in the ice of Green Bay that kept them from reaching shore. While the eight were brought back to land, two other ice fishermen declined rescue and decided to stay and fish.
An Oconto County sheriff's dispatcher said Tuesday she had no reports of trouble for the two who decided to stay on the ice Monday. Deputy Troy Sherman told the Green Bay Press-Gazette the two know the bay and wanted to stay.
The fishermen were stranded after winds picked up on the bay and a narrow crack in the ice widened to 30 feet.
