Car kills 7-year-old Minn. boy after running red light

A 7-year-old child in Montrose, Minn. was killed by an out-of-control motorist while waiting on the sidewalk for his school bus shortly after 8:00 a.m. Friday.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, driver Robert Mercier, 47, of Arlington, Minn., ran a red light, crossed oncoming lanes of traffic and struck Hayden Solien of Montrose at the intersection of U.S. Highway 12 and Minnesota Highway 25. The car then crashed into some trees and overturned, killing the driver.

Lt. Eric Roeske called the scene "an unspeakable tragedy."

"When you look at the situation and the scene, I can't help but think there's 100 different ways this could have happened without the result of a young child dying," he said. "It's a really tough situation and obviously our hearts go out to that family and what they're having to deal with."
