Partial skull found on Minn. sandbar

A couple rock hunting along the Minnesota River has discovered part of a human skull on a sandbar.

The rock hunter called the Nicollet County sheriff's office after finding the skull fragment Sunday. The sheriff's office searched the area where the fragment was found but did not find anything else.

A sheriff's deputy took the fragment to an anthropology professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato. She tells The Journal of New Ulm (http://bit.ly/wROEaP) the bone may be that of an American Indian or early settler whose burial site was disturbed by the swollen river.

The fragment was taken to the Ramsey County medical examiner's office and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for further examination including DNA tests.
