Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney is trying to shake accusations that he's an inconsistent conservative after a top adviser compared him to an Etch A Sketch toy.

Romney said Wednesday that he'll run a conservative campaign if he wins the nomination. Romney says his policies and positions won't change when he campaigns against President Barack Obama.

Earlier Wednesday, Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom was asked during a TV interview if the GOP primary was pushing Romney too far to the right.

Fehrnstrom replied: ``It's almost like an Etch A Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and restart all over again'' when the general election begins.

Rivals Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich seized on the comment as evidence that Romney will say anything to get elected.
