Police fire at dogs; 1 cop hit in lower leg

A Minneapolis police officer is recovering after being shot in the lower leg, apparently by a fellow officer.

Police were assisting the state Department of Corrections in searching for a sex offender Friday evening. The police department says the suspect ran out through a home's back door, followed by two pit bulls that ran at the officers in a threatening manner.

Officers began firing at the dogs. Police Sgt. Steve McCarty says one officer was hit by a stray police bullet. It wasn't immediately clear whether he was hit directly or if a shot ricocheted.

The officer was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in good condition. No one else was hurt.

McCarty says an internal-affairs investigation will be conducted.

The suspect was still on the loose Saturday. (Copyright 2012 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
