Gingrich: Backers want him to stay in race

Newt Gingrich says supporters are encouraging him to stay in the GOP presidential race after former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum dropped out.

Gingrich campaigned at a senior center in Newark, Del., Wednesday, one day after Santorum's announcement and two weeks before the state's April 24 primary. Gingrich says he since has heard from many voters and contributors who thanked him for staying in.

The former House speaker has vowed to campaign until the GOP national convention in August. He says he wants to ensure the party platform reflects what he called "a 21st century conservatism."

Gingrich has acknowledged Mitt Romney as the likely nominee, but said Romney still doesn't have the convention delegates he needs to win the nomination.
