Duluth officer honored 104 years later

The name of a Duluth police officer who died in the line of duty will finally be inscribed on a plaque at City Hall.

It's been 104 years since Lt. Arthur Briggs died while struggling with an intoxicated suspect. A retired Duluth police officer researched Briggs' death and forwarded his findings to the St. Louis County Medical Examiner's Office.

Briggs' original death certificate listed the cause as "natural." Briggs' heart gave out as he fought with the suspect at a Laundromat. The medical examiner changed the cause of death to "homicide" due to the stress of a struggle with an intoxicated suspect after receiving the research.

The Duluth News Tribune says Briggs will be honored on May 17 during the city's annual ceremony dedicated to officers who died in the line of duty.
