Work to begin on transit center in Duluth

The city of Duluth can move forward on its $27 million downtown transit center, now that state funding has been secured.

About $6 million included in the state bonding bill was the last piece of funding needed for the Multimodal Transportation Center. It will allow passengers to transfer between buses, catch a taxi and walk to the downtown convention center and the lakefront festival park.

The state Legislature's $496 million bonding bill passed last week provided $6.4 million for the "Greater Minnesota Trust." Minnesota Department of Transportation officials agreed to direct $4.5 million to the Duluth center. MnDOT will provide the remaining $1.5 million. The Duluth News Tribune says the transit center is expected to be completed in 2014.
