Osseo science labs revamped after accident
MAPLE GROVE, Minn. (AP) -- The Osseo School District is making more permanent changes to its classroom science demonstrations after an experiment burned four students.
An audit team of 12 science teachers is recommending the methanol flash bottle demonstration that burned the students continue to be disallowed. It has not been done since the accident.
The team's report calls for a more stringent approval process for science experiments, provides a detailed list of accepted demonstrations and requires science teachers to watch videos on experiment safety.
Four students at a Maple Grove middle school were burned last December, including one seriously, when a teacher poured a small amount of methanol into a 5-gallon plastic jug and ignited the fumes, causing a fire larger than he expected. KARE-TV says the science teacher remains on paid leave.
