SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A spokeswoman for the Golden Gate Bridge says today will prove to be "a big, historic day" as the City by the Bay celebrates the famous bridge that spans it.

Tens of thousands of people are expected at San Francisco's waterfront for a fireworks display marking 75 years since the Golden Gate Bridge officially opened. Events will be held at multiple sites along a stretch of waterfront from Fort Point south of the bridge to Pier 39 along The Embarcadero.

The party started Saturday at one of the world's most recognizable landmarks and included tours of the bridge and a festival featuring art exhibits, film screenings and music.
