2 Minn. students in spelling bee semifinals
Two Minnesota students advanced to the semifinals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee Wednesday.
Antony Joseph of North Mankato correctly spelled imaret in the third round to qualify. Roshini Asirvatham of Rochester correctly spelled psilosis.
Three other Minnesotans spelled their words correctly in the third round, but hadn't earned enough points in the preliminary rounds to advance to the semifinals.
Lori Anne Madison, 6, of Lake Ridge, Va., was the youngest contestant in the history of the spelling bee. Madison also didn't qualify for the semifinals.
The competition, which is being held in Maryland, will continue on Thursday.
Sean Conley, who won in 2001, is the only Minnesotan to win the 87-year-old competition.
