Flood damage keeps Jay Cooke park closed
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says Jay Cooke State Park will remain closed for now due to severe flood damage to Highway 210.
Highway 210 provides the only vehicle access to the park in northeastern Minnesota. The DNR says the highway is impassable due to mudslides and large washed-out sections from last week's heavy rains.
Damage to the campground and park buildings at Jay Cooke was minimal and no one was hurt. But the DNR says the park's swinging bridge over the St. Louis River is heavily damaged, and water and sewer service remains unavailable.
The campground at Moose Lake State Park has fully reopened. The campground at Savanna Portage State Park is scheduled to reopen Thursday. All other Minnesota state parks along the North Shore are open.
