High school grad missing in Lake Minnetonka
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Authorities are searching Lake Minnetonka for a 20-year-old man who disappeared after jumping off a boat.
Family members say Kennedy Maddox, 20, was celebrating his high school graduation when he disappeared. He jumped off a boat to go swimming near Big Island around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday but never resurfaced.
His mother, Irene Maddox, says a friend jumped in after him, but Kennedy never surfaced. She says her son knows how to swim, but wasn't wearing a life jacket.
Four other young adults were aboard the 20-foot boat.
Recovery crews are focusing on an area about 300 feet from Big Island. KMSP-TV says the Hennepin County Sheriff's Department has used sonar to try to locate Maddox, who graduated from Minnetonka High School a few weeks ago.
A Minnesota State Patrol helicopter and fire departments from Long Lake, Wayzata, and Excelsior are helping in the search.
