Classes for first-time St. Paul homebuyers

First-time homebuyers can now sign up for homeownership classes in St. Paul.

The non-profit Community Neighborhood Housing Services is offering the eight-hour HomeStretch classes to prepare potential homebuyers for responsible home ownership.

Spokesperson Amanda Welliver says the workshops teach buyers how to prepare for the home buying process, how to understand mortgages and how to avoid foreclosure and predatory lending.

"It's just a big process. It's the largest purchase most people are going to make in their life and coming into that prepared, knowing how the process works, knowing how to determine what you can afford and what is a good investment of that money is going to save people a lot of hassle," Welliver said.

Classes are $35 but scholarships are available. Hmong-language classes are also available free of charge.
