Salmonella: Iowa farmer issues tomato recall

An organic farmer from northern Iowa is recalling grape tomatoes distributed in stores in three states, including Minnesota and Wisconsin because they may contain salmonella.

As product recalls go, this one is small. Farmer Menno Beachy of Cresco, Iowa sent 180 pints of certified organic grape tomatoes to stores between July 26 and Aug. 6. A random check by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture turned up salmonella contamination, Beachy said. He says he issued a recall immediately.

Beachy said the tomatoes were grown on a farm in southern Minnesota. He has suspended his operation until the source of the contamination is found.

No illnesses have been reported. Consumers should dispose of the tomatoes or return them to the store.
