Warning issued of suspected phone scam

The Minnesota Department of Revenue is warning taxpayers to beware of a suspected scam where a company attempts to obtain personal financial information over the phone.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue received a report that a company identifying itself as Alliance claimed to represent the "Minnesota Internal Service Representatives," according to Department of Revenue Assistant Commissioner Terri Steenblock.

Steenblock said the company offered to send a tax refund for a small fee, and also asked for financial information.

"The Department of Revenue will never call somebody and ask them over the phone to give us their Social Security or their bank account information," Steenblock said. "And we would never charge a fee or another type of penalty to allow someone to receive a refund."

Steenblock said Minnesotans can anonymously report suspected scammers on the state Department of Revenue website.
