State and local authorities are investigating a shooting at a Woodbury motel that left one person dead and involved a hostage standoff.

Police responded to a 911 call from the Red Roof Inn where 12 people were involved in what police are calling a "complex crime scene."

Authorities say at one point, a shot was fired and three officers returned gunfire, striking and killing one man. The standoff ended at 5 a.m. when a suspect surrendered.

Woodbury police chief Lee Vague says that suspect is in custody, and the investigation is continuing.

"We know there was a lot of criminal activity that was going on inside that motel room," he said. "We know people were assaulted, and I'm really not in a position to get into details of what happened yet because quite frankly, that's what we're trying to figure out."

Three Woodbury police officers have been placed on paid administrative leave which is routine following a shooting incident.
