Wading pools in Mpls. stay open

Given the hot weather, Minneapolis residents will get a few extra days to splash around in 32 wading pools scattered across the city.

The pools were scheduled to close Tuesday, but now they will stay open at least until Sunday, Sept. 9 -- and possibly longer if temperatures remain in the 80s.

The policy applies to about half the wading pools operated by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. For safety reasons, pools located near schools closed last week and will not be refilled.

The concrete wading pools are only about 3 feet deep, but Park Board Superintendent Jayne Miller says they're a popular attraction.

"They are a very valued commodity in this community," Miller said. "Kids and families love to use them."

Miller says there's no cost associated with keeping the pools open five extra days.
