Anti-same-sex marriage group makes first Minn. TV buy

The group supporting the proposed same-sex marriage ban in the state constitution has made its first TV ad buy as the campaign moves toward Minnesota's airwaves.

Minnesota for Marriage put down $186,300 at KARE-TV, the Twin Cities NBC affiliate. That will get the group 162 commercials of 30 seconds each in which to spread its message that Minnesota's existing statutory ban on same-sex marriage should be made stronger in the constitution.

Spokesman Chuck Darrell says the group is moving forward with ad buys but he declined to reveal what other Minnesota stations might be included, or the content of the commercials.

Freedom to Marry, which opposes the amendment, started airing a 30-second ad last month in the Twin Cities and Duluth. Minnesotans United for All Families, the main "vote no" campaign, has already reserved $1 million for ads in the three weeks before the election.
