Wooden Leg fire threatening BWCA now contained

Officials say the Wooden Leg fire that had threatened to ignite a highly flammable area of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area is completely contained.

Fire information officer Tracy Richards says all fires in the area are now either contained or extinguished.

Richards said that once the weather dries out and winds come up, officials will resume flights to look for places hit by lightning that might re-ignite.

"Because there were so many lightning strikes associated with that storm that had rolled through, there still could be some strikes that are out there but haven't come to life yet because the weather's been cool and damp," Richards said. "But we're not ruling them out at this point."

Richards says restrictions remain in effect to limit campfires to between the hours of 7pm and midnight.
