Granite Gear expanding near Minn. HQ

TWO HARBORS, Minn. (AP) -- Outdoor-gear company Granite Gear is expanding operations near its headquarters in Two Harbors, in part due to the strength of its U.S. military market.

The company doubled its space this month by leasing a new 7,200-square-foot distribution center nearby. Chief operating officer Dan Cruikshank says its existing facilities have been "overflowing."

The company started in 1986 with consumer outdoor products, such as rugged backpacks and canoe packs. In recent years it expanded into the tactical and military markets, landing its first military contract in 2008. Its packs are now used by Navy SEALs, Army Rangers and Green Berets.

A Duluth News Tribune report says Granite Gear has about 40 employees in Two Harbors. Cruikshank says the local expansion shows that the company is committed to its community.
