DHS hosts event on adoption awareness
The Minnesota Department of Human Services marks the beginning of National Adoption Awareness Month on Sunday with its 15th annual event to introduce potential foster families to children.
Commissioner Lucinda Jesson said that over the past 15 years the number of children in the foster system decreased as DHS entered into contracts with private adoption agencies; worked with community organizations; and used computer tools to find relatives willing to provide a home.
"Fifteen years ago we had a thousand children in our foster case system. Waiting for a family," Jesson said. "And the good news is today, we only have about 355 children."
Jesson said that was still too many children without families but said she was glad that Minnesota is making progress.
The event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Prom Center Event Facility, 484 Inwood Ave., Oakdale.
