Long-time Minn. marathoner dies of cancer

A lifelong St. Paul resident whose passion for running led him to finish 187 marathons has died of lung cancer at age 64.

Joe Schletty ran his first marathon, the City of Lakes, in 1978. That marathon was the predecessor to the Twin Cities Marathon.

Schletty's son, David, tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press his father ran in Grandma's Marathon in June, but by the time the Twin Cities Marathon rolled around in October, he was too sick to compete. Until then, Schletty had never missed a Twin Cities Marathon.

A funeral mass for Schletty was held Monday at the Church of St. Matthew in St. Paul.
