St. Paul district spending $7M to renovate schools
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The St. Paul public school district is spending nearly $7 million to renovate four shuttered schools, including two that sustained mold damage.
The schools were decommissioned in 2010 and are scheduled to reopen in 2013.
The district has already spent more than $184,000 on mold removal, plus another $45,000 to deal with water damage from a hose left on overnight.
A St. Paul Pioneer Press report says St. Paul schools get about $30 million for maintenance and construction annually from the sale of bonds and a property-tax levy.
District facilities director Sara Guyette says officials were keeping an eye on the facilities while they were decommissioned. But several district employees say the district shuttered the schools too quickly and are now paying the price for an inadequate maintenance plan.
