SCSU students vote on homecoming

Students at St. Cloud State University will vote this week on whether to ask administrators to bring back the school's homecoming celebration.

In 2011 SCSU officials dropped homecoming because it was difficult to schedule a game around the celebration, and the fall games were competing for fans with other events, like the state's deer hunting opener. They replaced homecoming with four weekend events spread throughout the year.

Senate association president Jarrod Wiggins said this week's student vote is non-binding, but if it passes it would send a message to administrators.

"We're doing this to get a formal student opinion and to show the university that there really is a strong interest we believe on the part of students to have the word homecoming on our campus," he said.

Officials said it was getting harder to schedule home football games around the celebration. They also cited competition for fans with other events, like Minnesota's deer opener. They replaced homecoming with four weekend celebrations spread throughout the year.

"This is the only official way that we can really get a formal student voice on whether or not they support homecoming," Wiggins said.

Students can vote on the issue through Wednesday, in person or by email.
