The Minneapolis City Council holds a public hearing Wednesday afternoon on the nomination of Janee Harteau as the city's next chief of police.

Harteau, a 47-year-old Duluth native, is poised to become the city's first female police chief. She joined the force in 1987 and has served in a wide range of leadership positions in the department over her career.

Harteau received several award recommendations and honors as a patrol officer. She became the head of the downtown precinct in 2006 and was selected as assistant chief in 2010.

She has said her main priority is to maintain the several year downward trend of violent crime in the city. However, the city has seen an uptick in violence this year, particularly in north Minneapolis. Harteau says she especially wants to close the unsolved killing of a three-year-old on the north side nearly a year ago.
