Man killed after St. Paul Kowalski's robbery

A man suspected of robbing the St. Paul Kowalski's supermarket at gunpoint was shot Monday morning while running away from two police officers, and later died.

Sgt. Paul Paulos says the incident happened shortly after 8:30 a.m.

"What we can tell you at this time is that a lone man did enter the store, show a handgun, receive some moneys and leave via the the store and police gave chase," Paulos said.

Paulos said the officers pursued the suspect by foot north along Ayd Mill Road, and shots were fired. Police say the suspect was shot by at least one officer, and he died later Monday morning at Regions Hospital.

The two officers were not hurt, and will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard police policy for an officer-involved shooting. The medical examiner's office has not yet released the suspect's identity.

Ayd Mill Road between Grand Avenue and Hamline Avenue is closed until further notice.
