Elf on the Shelf keeps a watchful eye on children, reports back to Santa

For kids, Christmas is synonymous with familiar characters like Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.

But there's a new kid on the block who is becoming part of the holiday tradition for many families. He's known as the Elf on the Shelf. He first appeared in a children's book that was published in 2005.

Now, lots of families have adopted an elf of their own. One of them is the Eilers family in Cottage Grove. Aaron Eilers is the dad in that house and he spoke with MPR's Cathy Wurzer by phone.
