As 2012 comes to a close, we've been replaying some of the stories from the past year that our reporters found most memorable. Our next story was picked by reporter Dan Gunderson, who says the people he meets often make stories stand out. 


Nearly a year ago, Dan reported on a Kurdish family in Moorhead that was trying to rescue a relative in Iraq who faces death threats because he worked for the U.S. military. Hundreds of Kurdish refugees resettled in Minnesota after they were forced out of Iraq in the 1980s by Saddam Hussein.   


But Mohammed Salih stayed behind. His application for a special visa disappeared in State Department bureaucracy. In fact, Dan has only spoken with Salih by phone, but says he's a memorable character none the less.
