Free Metro Transit rides on New Year's Eve

Metro Transit will be offering free rides on buses and trains tonight for New Year's revelers. It's the second year for the program. The rides start at 6 p.m.

The program is sponsored by Miller Brewing and JJ Taylor Distributing and it covers regular light rail and bus trips. Northstar commuter rail trains aren't eligible for the free rides, because they run on a reduced schedule today.

While the free fares apply to all Metro Transit's scheduled bus and train trips, only 26 bus routes offer service after midnight. Two extra light rail trains have also been scheduled from Target Field in downtown Minneapolis, including departures at 2:13 and 2:57 a.m. on New Year's Day.

The offer doesn't require coupons or tickets. Boarding will be free on trains and buses.
