Mother, child escape crash into icy river

A Minnesota woman escaped from her car Sunday after it crashed into the Red Cedar River near Menomonie.

The Wisconsin State Patrol says 21-year-old Daneilla Overett, of Elko, told them she was travelling west bound on Interstate 94 shortly before 6 a.m. when she fell asleep at the wheel, with her 23 month old daughter in the car with her.

Overett told police she woke up and found her car in the median heading for the Red Cedar River. The car went through the median, hit the eastbound bridge, went over the embankment and landed on the river ice below.

Police said the car broke through the ice and sank into the river part way, but Overett was able to escape from the car with her daughter.

The Wisconsin State Patrol says Overett wasn't injured, although her daughter suffered some scratches and bruises from the crash.
