Mpls. police report first homicide of 2013

The police in Minneapolis say the city's first homicide of 2013 occurred about 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

The police said officers called to a north Minneapolis house in the 2900 block of Russell Avenue found an unresponsive man who had been stabbed. Emergency responders pronounced the man dead at the scene. Another man was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

The Homicide Unit was investigating, police said, and there was no remaining threat to public safety.

Last week Minneapolis officials said violent crime in the city was down 6 percent in 2012 over the previous year, when crime was at its lowest in decades.
