Proposed legislation cracks down on aggressive debt buyers

There's an effort at the state Capitol to put more regulations on the debt collection industry here in Minnesota.

Companies that buy debt from credit card companies and banks and then try to collect on that debt would have to supply more evidence about the people they're trying to collect from.

Attorney General Lori Swanson joined lawmakers in pitching the bill at the capitol Monday.

The bill would add requirements on those debt buyers when they file claims in court against consumers. Often the claims go to court and the debt buyer wins without the consumer even knowing he or she was a party.
