Minnesota Scenes: Your January

Arts & Culture

A woman who identified herself as Maria D'Angelo from Cottage Grove sports some colorful winter head gear while watching the Red Bull Crashed Ice competition on Jan. 26, 2013 in downtown St. Paul, Minn.
There are things one expects to find in the alleys of St. Paul, but it's probably safe to say that an upright piano isn't one of them. Josh Ebbers took this photo on Jan. 9, 2013 in downtown St. Paul.
Courtney Dillon, after an unsuccessful search for the St. Paul Winter Carnival medallion at Upper Landing Park, Jan. 27, 2013.
An eerie glow of daylight seen from behind the frozen Minneahaha Falls in Minneapolis on Jan. 6.
Melissa King took this photo of her pooch on a Christmas Eve walk in Backus, Minn. It was so cold that Chet the dog had a snow beard from his breath crystallizing on his face.
Low in the sky over Lake Superior, the sun's glow filters through ice-encrusted trees on the harbor front in Grand Marais, Minn.
Stephan Hoglund captured this frozen scene on the edge of Lake Superior Jan. 23, 2013, at Duluth's Park Point just after sunrise. When he returned that evening, the odd ice formations had disappeared.
Mary Harnan sent along this photo of some very young snowmobile riders taking part in the annual Center City Lakes Celebration on Jan. 26, 2013.

Photographer Clint McMahon writes: This is the outside of the building that houses Nina's coffee shop and the original Garrison Keillor bookstore, Common Good Books. It's also one of my favorite buildings in the Twin Cities. I think it's because it reminds me of every building in New York and Chicago. I wish we had more of these old buildings around Minnesota.
