Poetry contest open to Minn. military kids

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Children of military families in Minnesota are being invited to enter Sen. Al Franken's second annual poetry contest.

The theme is "My Experience as a Military Child."

The contest is open to children in three age categories: kindergarten to sixth grade; seventh to ninth grades, and 10th to 12th grades. Children whose parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts or uncles are either active military or military veterans are eligible.

The winners will be invited to attend a reception at the Democratic senator's St. Paul office. The winning poems will be framed and displayed in Franken's St. Paul or Washington, D.C., offices.

Franken says he wants to use the contest to recognize children of military members because they're also making a sacrifice.

Entries are due by April 16.
