The opening salvo of the Iraq War began early on March 19, 2003, with a U.S. bombing raid on the Dora Farms community on the outskirts of Baghdad, where the U.S. military believed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was visiting family. The following morning, March 20, Operation Iraqi Freedom began with a massive bomb attack on Baghdad and other Iraqi cities. By April 9, Baghdad had fallen, and on May 1, President George W. Bush declared the end of major combat operations. Combat operations didn't formally end, however, until 2010.

The following is a brief account of the almost 100 military personnel with Minnesota connections who have died in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan since the onset of hostilities that followed the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Non-combat deaths and non-military deaths related to the wars are also listed below in separate categories.

Army Maj. Curtis D. Feistner, 34, of White Bear Lake, Minn., was the first casualty. He died on Feb. 22, 2002 in the Philippines during a training. Feistner was assigned to E Co, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, based at Fort Campbell, Ky.
