Allegiant plans temporary halt to flights

Allegiant Air will temporarily suspend flights from St. Cloud this fall.

Airline officials say flights will be suspended from Aug. 14 to Oct. 9.

Vacation travel during that time of the year is particularly slow, said Allegiant spokeswoman Jessica Wheeler.

"A seasonal suspension is just something that we work into our schedule to meet demand," she said, adding that "the demand for leisure travel and vacation travel goes down significantly as ... kids go back to school. People get into a different mind-set at work ... so people are simply not going on as many vacations."

Wheeler said that by matching that demand the company is able to keep costs and fares down.

In December, Allegiant began offering twice weekly flights to Mesa, Ariz., outside Phoenix.

Before Allegiant's arrival into the market, St. Cloud had been without regular service since Delta Airlines pulled out of the market in late 2009.

St. Cloud officials have an ongoing campaign to bring in an additional carrier to the airport.
