The Minneapolis police say they deployed a robot on Friday night to resolve a situation that involved a hostage.
Officers were alerted to shots fired in the Cedar-Riverside area about 10:30 p.m. Friday, said Sgt. Steve McCarty.
The police responded to an apartment building in the 1500 block of Fourth Street South. When they arrived, they found a victim who had been shot and sent him to the Hennepin County Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
"Officers determined that this person responsible for the shooting fled into an apartment," McCarty said, adding that officers "tried to get him out. They were unsuccessful. SWAT responded. When it was determined there was a female inside the apartment, hostage negotiators arrived."
After several hours, McCarty said, negotiators secured the release of the woman, who had non-gunshot-related injuries.
McCarty said the SWAT team sent a robot inside the building and found the suspect dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner has not released the suspect's name.
