Goal of 1 million sandbags reached in Fargo

Volunteers in Fargo have reached the goal of filling one million sandbags in advance of anticipated spring flooding.

The mark was reached Thursday. Officials opened Sandbag Central on April 3, with the goal of filling a million sandbags in 10 days. The site was scheduled to close Friday afternoon.

The National Weather Service gives a 50 percent chance of the Red River reaching 38 feet, which would be the fifth-highest flood of all time in the area and the fourth major flood in five years for Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn.
