MSP airport preps for future growth

Big changes are coming to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

The airport is planning to install a great array of solar panels on parking garage roofs. The panels will power a significant portion of the airport. In addition, one or two hotels are expected to be built at the airport within the next decade.

Additional gates and parking will be needed to accommodate a projected 50 percent surge in passenger growth by 2030, airport officials say.

Meanwhile, restrooms are getting spiffed up, and dining and other services are expanding, airports commission executive director Jeff Hamiel said.

"McDonald's is coming back to Terminal 1," Hamiel said. For all those who have families and kids, you're cheering because that has been the number one complaint -- the loss of the McDonald's restaurant on the G Concourse.

The restaurant is expected to open in August or September.

Hamiel also forecasts JetBlue will eventually enter the Twin Cities. it's not a matter of if but when the carrier comes here, he said.
