The latest winter storm to sweep across Minnesota dropped as much as 8 inches of snow in northern parts of the state, and 10 inches in northwest Wisconsin.
In the Twin Cities, the totals averaged between 2 and 4 inches. With 17.3 inches this month, this is now the third snowiest April on record in the metro. That's paltry compared to 50.2 inches in Duluth this month, both the snowiest April and snowiest month ever on record for Duluth.
Metro Transit spokesman John Siqveland says buses and trains got off to a good start.
"We have about half of our 730 buses that will be out during the peak of the morning rush hour on the street right now, and they're running about 98 percent on time, with the average delay of those few buses running behind at under 2 minutes," he said. Light rail was on time, as was Northstar.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported that roads in most of the state were in good or fair driving condition for the morning drive. Roads east of Interstate 35 and south of Wilmar werelisted in difficult driving condition, because of snow compacted into ice and blowing snow accumulating on roads.
In the metro area, road conditions were fair, if wet with melting snow and ice, said Kevin Gutknecht, a spokesman for MnDOT. "By mid afternoon the roads should be drying out."
It wasn't the amount of snow as much as the date that's wearing on some Minnesotans, like Dan Charipar, who spent most of the night plowing out gas stations in Minneapolis and St. Paul. He says he can't believe he's plowing in the last week of April.
"It's been busy. Very busy. A lot of snow. It kind of makes me sick to my stomach, but we live in Minnesota," he said. "What do you do?"
