3M sells fly fishing business to outdoor sports outfitter

3M is spinning off two businesses that are highly respected by fly fishing fans.

The company has a deal to sell its Scientific Anglers and Ross Reels businesses to Orvis, the Vermont clothing and sporting goods company. Scientific Anglers is now based in Michigan; Ross Reels is in Colorado.

Robert Hawkins, owner of Bob Mitchell's Fly Shop in Lake Elmo, Minn. says the 3M-owned companies make great fly fishing lines and reels.

"The science they had behind making these lines and reels, the lines specifically," Hawkins said. "The SA lines are just so popular and they've been popular for so many years. They just flow really nice through the guides on your fly rod. Just a great product."

The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of June. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
