U professor appointed to National Academy of Sciences

Some good news arrived for University of Minnesota Prof. Sarah Hobbie this week: She's been appointed to the National Academy of Sciences.

Hobbie, who was surprised by the April 30 announcement, said she had no idea she was even being considered for the post, according to a news release from the university.

"I was shocked, honored and humbled," she said in the news release. "There are so many other deserving people. I have a responsibility to step up to the role and make a difference."

Hobbie, an ecologist, focuses her research on how human activities change the way carbon and nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus cycle through the environment.
