Confederate flags yanked from VA hospital
HOT SPRINGS, S.D. (AP) -- Veterans Affairs officials have once again removed two Confederate flags from a display at a VA hospital in the southwestern South Dakota city of Hot Springs.
The flags were removed from an eight-flag historical display last month after some veterans receiving treatment at the hospital complained they were offensive. The flags were put back a few days later because officials said they had historical significance.
That angered some veterans. U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson also called for the removal of the flags.
VA Midwest Health Care Network Director Janet Murphy issued a statement Wednesday saying the flags will be removed "to ensure the Hot Springs VA Medical Center is a place of healing for all veterans." She also apologized to those who were offended by the display.
