Panel: Tuition change for Minn. students

A committee of faculty, students and staff is recommending Minnesota students attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison pay out-of-state tuition.

The panel says UW-Madison should seek an exemption from Wisconsin's longtime reciprocity agreement with Minnesota.

Charging students from Minnesota out-of-state tuition is part of a broader strategy to create an "ideal incoming freshman class" for the University of Wisconsin flagship.

Minnesota students currently receive a discount on tuition and pay only a few thousand dollars more than Wisconsin residents. The same arrangement is available for Wisconsin students attending public universities in Minnesota. Exempting UW-Madison from the Minnesota-Wisconsin tuition reciprocity agreement would require approval from both the UW System Board of Regents and the State of Wisconsin.

The Journal Sentinel says the report was presented this week to the Faculty Senate.
