DNR plans stepped up watercraft inspections
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The Memorial Day weekend marks the start of the boating season for many Minnesotans. So the Department of Natural Resources is reminding boaters and anglers to be extra vigilant to help stop the spread of aquatic invasive species.
Ann Pierce, the DNR's invasive species supervisor, says boaters and anglers are responsible for knowing the law before hitting the water.
Before leaving a water access, every boater must: clean off all aquatic plants and animals; pull the drain plug and leave it out when transporting the boat; drain all water from bait buckets, livewells and boats; and dispose of unwanted live bait in the trash.
The DNR says people can expect stepped up watercraft inspections statewide this summer. Inspectors and conservation officers issued 998 citations and 1,550 written warnings last year.
