Capitol building restoration to enter next stage

In this May 19, 2013 photo, workmen can be seen going about their job as scaffolding surrounds much of the State Capitol in St. Paul, Minn. More money to pay for an ongoing renovation of the building was salvaged in the closing hours of the 20113 legislative session. Lawmakers approved $109 million in bonds to keep the work going on the Capitol, which state officials say is badly crumbling and in need of major repairs.

If all goes according to plan, the marble on Minnesota's century-old State Capitol building will be restored to its original gleaming white in about four years. And the infrastucture of the aging facility will have been repaired and modernized.

This phase of the Capitol's renovation was kicked off by the State Legislature which, earlier this week, approved $109 million in funding for the construction.

MPR's Phil Picardi spoke with Spencer Cronk, Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Administration, about the renovation.
