North Country Trail stretches in Becker Co.

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (AP) -- Trail enthusiasts are ready to celebrate the opening of a 21-mile section of the North Country National Scenic Trail in northwestern Minnesota.

A day of activities is planned for Saturday, including a variety of guided hikes, cake and a ribbon cutting. Special hikes are set up for bird watchers, history buffs, photo enthusiasts and families who want just a short taste of the trail.

The activities take off from the Pine Lake Boat Access, off Becker County 29 about 14 miles northeast of Detroit Lakes.

The North Country National Scenic Trail covers 4,600 miles from the Adirondacks of New York to the plains of North Dakota. The new Minnesota section extends a 150-mile segment.
