Downey: Bachmann would have won in 2014

The head of the Minnesota Republican Party says Rep. Michele Bachmann would have won the 2014 election had she decided to seek re-election in the 6th District, but chances are good for any Republican in the area.

Keith Downey held off on naming potential candidates, in an interview on MPR News on Wednesday. He also said he was not involved with Bachmann's decision not to seek a fifth term.

"A lot of people are trying to figure out what they should do and if they'll throw their hat in the ring. This is one of the highest-growth districts; it's one of the most Republican districts in the state," Downey said. "It'll be a cherished seat and it'll be one that I think we will expect strong leadership from nationally. This is not somebody to go occupy a seat and cast votes. This is somebody who we're going to expect to lead."

Bachmann was "in a league of her own" and led the nation in fund-raising, Downey said, but her successor will probably raise a more typical amount.

Downey also thinks a Republican primary with several candidates will not weaken the party and that Republicans will maintain control over the district.

"Do we have a great chance at holding that seat? Absolutely. It is arguably our most Republican district in Minnesota," Downey said. "We have a deep bench, a lot of talent, a lot of energy, and I think people are going to see a really good campaign from a lot of talented, qualified people and we'll have an excellent candidate running in 2014."
