Charges: Tax preparer failed to file his own

A tax preparer who has completed hundreds of returns over the years, is charged in Aitkin County with failing to file his own tax returns.

Todd Sterling, of Aitkin Tax Service, is facing six felony charges in district court for failing to file returns in 2006, 2008 and 2009. The Minnesota Department of Revenue says Sterling told investigators he had prepared tax returns for 20 years and understood the filing requirements.

The Duluth News Tribune says Sterling avoided paying about $5,400 in state taxes. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine upon conviction. Sterling did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
